On December 20th, 2018, a wind storm caused severe and unprecedented damage to the White Rock Pier in White Rock B.C. Canada. Several sailboats moored at the pier broke loose, and were ultimately thrown against the pier by large waves. Built in 1914, the White Rock Pier is a unique historical and cultural monument in the city and acts as a centerpiece to the seaside community. Research has proven that climate change has increased the frequency of extreme weather events in many parts of the world. While I acknowledge that it is difficult to associate one specific weather event with climate change, will events such as the destruction of White Rock’s pier become more common as a result of our failure to act on climate change?
